Homework: Homework is given every other week. Students are expected to do homework at home and by themselves. But, they are told that they will be graded on effort, not correctness of their answers. We expect them to stretch their limits and show us how they approach difficult questions by breaking them into small problems, questioning the reasonableness of their answers, making assumptions, and building models. Then, when the students bring their assignments to class, we give them up to an hour in class to share their work with their groups and make a better homework solution - on the whiteboard - so the instructional staff can help if needed. At the end of the hour the solutions are posted on our learning management system. The students are then asked to mark up their original solution showing math errors or algorithmic errors (marked in blue ink) conceptual problems (in red ink). The students write a short reflection explaining how they overcame the barriers to understanding the conceptual problems during the group session by explaining what they learned from the exercise. The grade is base on the effort of their original solution and their honesty in the written reflection.
